This summer, Joe Cleary joined the California Center for Construction Education (CCCE), the external-facing unit of Cal Poly’s Construction Management Department, as the new director. Joe is an Associate Professor of Construction Management who has developed connections with construction industry firms over the last three decades. Joe worked as the Industry Liaison, Instructional Assistant Professor, and Professional Practice Coordinator in Construction Management at Illinois State University prior to joining Cal Poly in 2018. In addition to his time as a carpenter and commercial design-build contractor, he has long served with the Mechanical Contractors Association of America and the National Electrical Contractors Association.

Scott Kelting, Joe’s predecessor, collaborated closely with industry professionals and Cal Poly leadership to position CCCE as a key vehicle for strengthening ties between the university’s Construction Management department and the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. He restructured CCCE by creating a dedicated staff position and a team of student ambassadors to enhance outreach through recruiting programs, career fairs, CMAC mixers, and consulting services. His collaboration with the CM Department Head and industry partners led to the creation of the Construction Management Advisory Council (CMAC) and its expansion to over 175 members. Scott also partnered with the Carpenters Union and CMAC companies to launch the Carpenters’ Apprentice Internship program, connecting more than 20 students each summer with internships that provide essential hands-on learning experiences. Additionally, he developed consulting engagements and professional certificates in Construction Management, Facilities Management, and the Industrialized Construction Certificate Program, broadening CCCE’s services and partnerships. His most rewarding achievement was building lasting industry relationships and helping students secure internships and launch their careers.

Joe has several objectives in mind for the CCCE. This includes expanding CMAC to involve representation from a greater number of smaller or medium-sized companies and specialty contractors. Joe also looks to boost young alumni engagement, ensuring they stay connected to Cal Poly’s CM department as they transition into their careers.
