This summer apprentice program is designed to be mutually beneficial to students, industry members, and the Carpenters Union (SoCal Local 714 and NorCal Local 217). The first of its kind, students participate annually in this unique internship experience offered by industry partners. Students are provided the opportunity to work on a construction site as a first-period apprentice during the summer. The internship begins with one week of training that includes OSHA 10, fall protection, hand and power tool usage, and an introduction to labor history before students start their field internship. Through this program, participating student interns gain valuable field experience.
"The Carpenter's Apprentice Program allowed me to experience first hand all of the moving parts on a job site. I got to be apart of different crews from layout and safety, to form work and shoring. Being a part of these crews gave me a better understanding of how important each task is and how it effects the overall project as well as gave me a greater respect for the extremely hard work that carpenter's and laborers put in every day."
"The Carpenters Apprenticeship is an incomparable opportunity to experience working in the field. The experience will give you a tradesman (and Union) perspective that is priceless for managing and relating to construction workers of all kinds. For instance, the carpenters who taught me, appreciated and respected that I was learning how much time and effort it truly takes to build; meanwhile, office workers express they wish they had the opportunity to apprentice. Without a doubt, you will be enamored with construction after getting your hands on some real world operations."
“The Carpenters Apprenticeship gave me the unique opportunity to immerse myself into the role of a union carpenter, and truly learn how structures are built outside the classroom. I stepped foot onto a job site without previously picking up a hammer and nail, or any exposure to terminology of construction methods, materials, and equipment. I left with an appreciation, respect, and better understanding for the performed work while firsthand observing how pivotal the coordination of trades, logistics, and safety implementation on a job site is."
“This program is great for students wanting to gain hands-on experience working with a carpenter crew, with the goal of broadening the students’ experience and producing superior quality project leadership”
